Story:

The film is based on the life of Param Vir Chakra recipient Subedar Joginder Singh and his battalion of 20 men who held the position in defiance of an entire 600-man contingent of Chinese forces in the Sino-Indian war of 1962.

Review:

Gippy Grewal’s second foray in Bollywood as the leading actor is with the bilingual biopic based on the border conflict between China and India that took place in 1962. It tells the true story of Subedar Joginder Singh (Gippy Grewal) who showed great bravery in Battle at Bumla, inspiring a handful of soldiers to take on droves of Chinese soldiers.

Director Simerjit Singh has, in the typical manner of Indian war films, shown both the professional and personal life of Joginder Singh. He has interspaced the war-time life of the Subedar with incidences that mainly relate to his marriage with Gurdyal Kaur Banga (Aditi Singh). The fact that the filmmaker has introduced a good dose of innocent humour in the film in both the army and in civilian life is commendable, although the effort does seems a bit naive and even stretched at times. Gippy and Aditi share a great chemistry as the coy, newly married couple. The score heightens the urgency in the scenes however, the songs are a bit overdone as the filmmaker has tried to fit as many as he could in the first half.

The subject on the hands of the filmmaker is vast, and he has tried to do as much justice to the enormity of the story. There are glimpses of the Subedar’s previous skirmishes during the Second World War which establish some sort of scale. However, the final fight at Bamula leaves much to be desired. The fact that the true story of the men in question is so incredible that translating it on screen, as 20 or more men take on 600 heavily armed soldiers, may seem overdone. But as far as Indian war films go, the effects are superior in this one. If movies served with a generous dose of national pride are your scene, then this one should not be missed.
